Tax update: Tax Investigation Service (TIS) – Protecting you during an HMRC Tax Investigation

What is TIS?

Our tax investigation service covers our professional costs in the event our clients suffer an HMRC enquiry or other type of investigation.

HMRC has the power to inspect business documents and assets at your premises, can ask for documents and information, and make unannounced inspections to investigate matters.

When you subscribe to the TIS, you also benefit from access to a free client legal helpline and online legal hub.

What could an investigation involve?

Enquiries often involve a detailed examination of a specific item on a tax return whilst others may extend to a full review of an individual’s or company’s affairs. We have also seen a number of cross-tax investigations looking into all tax bases under one enquiry from corporation tax to PAYE, as well as VAT and the directors’ personal tax returns!

We recommend our tax compliance clients consider joining our TIS. Every year, HMRC carries out enquiries into the tax affairs of an increasing number of individuals and businesses in the UK. Many people find an HMRC enquiry disruptive, intrusive, stressful and ultimately expensive.

Key figures

  • 320,000 – compliance checks completed by HMRC into taxpayers in 2023/24
  • £3,800 – the average professional fees associated with a tax enquiry but more complex enquiries could run into tens of thousands of pounds.
  • 36% – the approximate number of enquiries by HMRC in 2022 that resulted in a nil settlement.

Look out for our TIS invitation letters and renewal invoices which will be sent out in early October.
