Continuing our series of spotlights on our Tax team, here we catch up with Bruce Black, Director.
Why did you choose accounting and how did it come about?
While studying for my economics degree, I found tax in particular dynamic and interesting. I chose to then undertake a corporate tax training course at HMRC, initially investigating small cash businesses and eventually specialising in international corporate tax for large businesses.
What is your role at Hazlewoods?
I planned a private sector move, mainly to test myself professionally, and so moved to Hazlewoods in 2017 where my role as the corporate tax technical lead adviser entails looking after the affairs of our larger and more complex company clients.
I provide our clients with an overview of corporation tax technical issues, with a specialism in cross border tax and transfer pricing. Essentially this means mitigating risk, making sure we are doing things properly, such as paying the correct UK tax on cross border transactions. I also act as a specialist adviser on transfer pricing, providing international support for companies moving abroad, or those entering an overseas market. Since 2013 the international tax landscape has changed beyond recognition, and so I help guide our clients through this minefield.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I find it very satisfying solving a client’s complex problems and also saving them money. For one recent client, we advised them to change their existing overseas guidance, saving them tens of thousands of pounds in tax they didn’t need to pay.
Clients range from those that know a lot about the subject and just need a bit of additional support to those who are starting from scratch and need guiding through the whole process. Knowing that we have provided the correct advice to someone’s particular needs is very rewarding. The challenge is giving clear and simple explanations of the risks and consequences.
