Healthcare update: Care Reimagined

With the digital landscape transforming at speed, businesses from across varying sectors are feeling the shift in different ways, needing to remain agile and open to new ways of working, with a particular focus on the introduction of artificial intelligence.

To understand more on how AI could look to impact the health and social care sector, we asked Charles Cross, Co-Founder of Emma AI, an artificial intelligence first technology provider within the healthcare space, to share his thoughts.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to transform the UK Health and Social Care sector, reshaping everything from patient care to business operations. With recent developments such as Keir Starmer’s vision for the UK as an AI powerhouse and Baroness Casey’s upcoming review into social care, AI is becoming a critical driver of innovation in the industry. These advancements come at a time when Health and Social Care businesses are under increasing pressure to deliver more effective, person-centred services amidst worsening financial constraints.

The vast majority of data in Health and Social Care exists in unstructured, natural language formats—clinical notes, care plans, care visit notes and multi-disciplinary team reports. AI’s ability to process and understand natural language offers unprecedented opportunities to unlock insights from this data. By analysing patterns and behaviours, AI can predict future care needs, improve resource allocation, and inform decision-making for both providers and policymakers.

Baroness Casey’s review into social care is expected to emphasise the importance of innovation and efficiency in tackling the challenges of an aging population and workforce shortages. AI solutions will play a pivotal role in addressing these issues, from optimising care pathways to streamlining administrative tasks.

The message from the Budget to Health and Social Care businesses was to find ways to do more with less. Through first principles thinking we need to reimagine how our business operates with this technology. AI is not a bolt on technology to be adopted but should be the golden thread throughout your organisation whether that be reviewing a patients care needs or managing the performance of a team member, the natural language data in our systems is there to be used.

Health and social care organisations must embrace this technology to remain competitive and deliver high-quality care. By integrating AI into their operations, these businesses can redesign how they operate—shifting from traditional models to ones that are data-driven, predictive, and highly efficient.

There is also an opportunity for the Care Quality Commission to revolutionise how they regulate Health and Social Care providers. With the new Single Assessment Framework and the desire for an ongoing and accurate rating we are in a world where a Provider Information Return may be just a click away. Augmenting inspectors with AI is a natural next step to allow them to analyse and digest the vast quantities of natural language data held within every Health and Social Care organisation.

In this new era, AI is not just a tool for improving care delivery—it is a catalyst for reshaping the entire health and social care system.

Charles Cross is the co founder of Emma AI – an artificial intelligence first technology provider that is reshaping the Health and Social Care sector. Through this work Charles became an Innovation Fellow at Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System. Prior to cofounding Emma, Charles was the Director of three Social Care organisations based in Essex, providing community support to Local Authorities, the NHS and private individuals. Charles has partnered with Leeds Beckett University, the University of Essex and MOONHUB (leading VR training platform) to launch the industry’s first virtual reality training experience.
