FAQs
Taking your first steps with a new career can be daunting, but we are here to help you make the decisions that are right for you. If your question is not answered below, please get in touch with our recruitment team at earlycareers@hazlewoods.co.uk, who will be happy to help.
Recruitment and Eligibility
Typically, we start recruiting in October for graduate, school leaver and 12-month placement roles, to start the following September. Earlier start dates may be available depending on team requirements. Follow our social media channels as we will announce when the vacancies go live there.
For school leavers we ask for 112 UCAS points and Grade 6/B in GCSE Maths and English Language. For graduates, we require a 2:1 in any degree subject, 112 UCAS points and GCSE Grade 6/B in Maths and English Language.
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer the apprenticeship to those on a graduate visa.
We offer three types of apprenticeship:
- School leavers study for the Level 4 AAT which takes 28 months to complete.
- Graduates are enrolled on the level 7 ACA qualification which takes three years to complete.
- For those interested in Tax, we also offer the ACA/CTA joint programme giving you a professional tax qualification on top of ACA. This takes 4 years to complete.
Joining Hazlewoods
Our dress code is simple – dress appropriately for your day. That means if you are going to a smart, corporate client or have meetings in the office, we would expect you to dress for the occasion. Whilst you are in the office, we’re a bit more relaxed – work smart/casual is fine.
When you join Hazlewoods, you will be assigned a buddy who will support you, alongside your manager, during your first few months while you settle in.
Within your first two months you will have a review with HR to find out how you have settled in, and to make sure you are happy with how your new role is going. You will also have a mid-probationary review with your manager, then a probationary sign-off review. Your objectives will be set and agreed with your manager, enabling your progression plan to be marked out.
Parking at both of our Cheltenham offices is limited, however you can park your car in nearby residential areas. If you decide to park at a local car park, we will reimburse those costs up to £11 per day. Employees are also entitled to discounted parking rates. You will have access to the full policy when you join.
Parking is available for everyone at our Staverton office which is out of town.
Yes – Hazlewoods will reimburse travel to clients for all staff, and for apprentices, to study locations. Hazlewoods will also meet the cost of overnight stays for work purposes and for professional/advanced level exams (conditions apply). You will have access to the full policy on joining.
At the Staverton office most people tend to bring their own food and eat in the breakout areas at lunchtime. Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s are nearby to the Staverton office, a short 5-minute drive in each direction. A sandwich van also comes daily.
Our Cheltenham offices are based in the centre of town where you’ll find a wide range of coffee/sandwich shops.
Study and Progression
We use First Intuition (FI) as our study provider who are based in the centre of Bristol, walking distance from Temple Meads train station. Your learning will be classroom based as we feel this is the most efficient way to support you in your qualification.
AAT – you will be required to attend blocks of study out of the offices, with your remaining time back in the office.
ACA – study is broken into blocks, where you spend up to two weeks at a time for Certificate and Professional level. For your Advanced Level exams, you spend around three weeks at a time on study, with a mirrored amount of revision time for each exam. The rest of your time will be in the office putting your theory into practice.
Yes, we provide time off for revision sessions with FI leading up to exams, and the day of the exam itself. Any additional study time taken should be in your own time, with Manager approval.
We have a yearly salary review, with two appraisals taking place where both performance at work and in your qualification is taken into consideration. Your salary increase will be based on your overall performance.
When you join Hazlewoods, you will join as part of one team. We do offer a rotation system*, where you have the option to apply to rotate for a specific team, for a fixed amount of time. This gives you a great opportunity to experience other teams, and other services that Hazlewoods provide.
